optima batteries

If you use a yellow top as your starting battery you will quickly need to replace it.

The current required for starting a car (in cold weather) can reach up to 500 Amps or more (remember your oil thickens as it cools, and the metals in the engine contract needing much more power to start), just to turn the engine over.

Deep-Cycle batteries (yellow tops) are not designed for this kind of load, They are designed to put out small amounts of power for a long time, not large amounts of power for a short time.

I HIGHLY (read as ONLY) recommend a red top battery in appliciations where the battery will be used for starting.

I have a redtop optima battery with a stock alternator. As far as voltage go he has helped pretty good. My lights don't dim nearly as much as replacing it. It starts up everytime I turn the key with no problem. I'd go with a redtop for everyday driving or using it as a main battery. It'll work very well for ya.

thanks for all the info in this topic. I was just about to spend all my money on a yellow top but now i will save a little and just get a red top.
