plain ol' me
Hi all,
I wound up buying a pair of JL XR650-csi speakers. I lowered the tweeters a bit and they sound amazing in my '98 Altima. They replaced a pair of base model MB Quart Discus 116's that are 5 years old and pushed quite a bit hehehe.
So I am out for a bit of a drive just enjoying the sound when poof my front speakers go dead...awww crap what the hell. I pull over and drop my back seat to check the amp...boy it is hot...the protection mode kicked in. I start the car and all is well. When I tuned the system I set the front channel gain to just over 50% to the JL's and the rear channel at 80% as it is bridged to the sub.
The amp manual states it pushes 50w rms into a 4 ohm load but I presume that is "on paper" power and the JL's want 70 watts so I presume I am pushing the amp harder than I should and at the level I was playing it protection mode was activated. The amp is also 5 years old and has been pushed hard as well though not all the time.
Guess it is time for a new amp hehehe.
Any suggestions in particular. I will be looking for another 4 channel probably in the 70 to 100 w rmsx4 range. It will be used in three channel mode bridging the rear channels to the sub. I would like to keep the cost between $300-$500.
My local shop has offered me a Planet Audio Zetar ZR300.4 amp for $300 saying that is $200 less than retail, I am a good customer I hope, and it is a very good quality amp. They also recommend JL amps but were out of 4 channels at the moment but said it would be in the $500 range.
SQ is my top priority.
What do you people think?
Thanks,
Kai
