Only using 1 coil???

Hello everyone, Ive got a quick question for those of you that know more than me about D2 and D4 ohm voice coils.

Im getting a RE SE10 to put in a stealth enclosure in the back of my camaro. Right now I have an Alpine 300 watt rms amp. In the future I may upgrade to a Sundown 1000 or something of that nature.

Question: Is it bad to only power one voice coil? My problem is if I get a D4, for now I can wire it down to 2 ohms and get my 300 watts rms. But if I upgrade the amp the least Ill ever get is 2 ohms which means I can only send it 600 watts from the Sundown as opposed to 1000 watts if I could wire it to 1 ohm.

So if I get a D2, I can still power it with my Alpine but Id only be using 1 voice coil, then when I upgrade the amp I can get my full 1000 watts to it.

So is there any drawback to doing this? More wear and tear on the speaker, wont sound as good, etc?

Please let me know so I can get this bad boy shipped!!!!!

Thanks in advance //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I've "heard" that only using 1 of 2 coils turns the other coil into a heating element.... not sure if it's true or not. But I've always heard that it's bad to only run one coil.

why not just run the sub in series at 4 ohms till you upgrade the amp. You can run just one vc with no problems. It changes the ts parameters and cuts the power the sub can take in half. You can do it, but i would just wire the sub to 4 ohms if i was you

Do not do that, the sub was not meant to run that way and will most liekly damage the sub as well as not perform nearly like it should
No, it won't damage anything.

However, you are correct in that the parameters of the driver will change. The alignment of the driver in the enclosure will change (enclosure requirements will change), which will change the response and "sound" of the driver.

Also, power handling is cut in half (some say 75% due to the 2nd coil acting as a heatsink).

Some people do, however, intentionally only power one coil of a DVC driver. Interesting things can be done by playing with the open coil //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Add a potentiometer to it and have variable Qtc at your fingertips !

i have been running my 15"IDQv2 on one coil for about a year now off of my Sony HT amp. No problems but i dont think i am sending much power to it at all. It gets way loud enough for my HT and music and i really still think it sounds quite good. As for running a sub that you care about in a car with a lot of power and other variables and i would be carefull.
