Online Gaming Help (Internet issue)

Ok, been at school for a month now and was looking to play a video game or two online to pass some time. Called up an old friend to host an IP game, went to join, nothing. I figured it was my game, re-installed, re-patched, same thing. After getting really frustrated I loaded up counter-strike to play. When I went to retrieve servers, it couldn't connect to master server and no games showed up.

My computer is windows xp on a wireless internet connection. My firewall is turned off. What can I do to allow my computer connections to these games?

thats wierd, but i can tell you from experience, i know that wireless connection isn't helping.

are you protected by a firewall on the wireless router? if so you need to open the ports on your router that your game requires you too.

and the wireless isnt helping, if possible try over a wired connection first

yeah you need to get into your router settings, make sure that the ports are correct as penguin stated. it took me some searching online to find the right ports for ghost recon when i used to play a lot.

i don't have experience with this game (or online gaming since doom2, actually) but i'll bet port forwarding is what's killing you.

Find out what ports are needed for the game, and forward them to your local IP adress, or if at all possible, set your IP address as a DMZ or demilitarized zone while you're playing, and then switch it back later.

DMZ's basically forward all ports to and from your local IP address inside your network, so your computer has a direct connection to the internet.

this is all based on you being at home, if you're at school/work, you're probably not gonna get it working.

~~~and on a side note, unless you're on a laptop, screw wireless. the performance is fine for web browsing/instant messaging, but games/p2p are a no-go with wireless.

Im at school right now, but not the school's connection (i live off campus in a house). My wireless USB network adapter is just plugged into my computer and picks up (Jumpstart-P1-65c1bd). I don't even know what connection that is or whose it is (Im assuming the house connection downstairs, but we've been having router issues so this works best). I have a separate uninstalled brand new cable modem in a box. If I set this up, would it work?

mabye, if your borrowing another connection it really isnt possible to forward ip's (unless you know the password) direct connecting to a cable modem should make it possible to play your game. most cable modems dont have a fire wall to worry about so you should be good.
