one 15 or two 12's

I want to do one of these options... first what would sound better, next i am looking for a setup that would take up less space not sure if 1 15inch would take up less space than 2 12's? Also which subs require small spaces i will probably go with sealed box like the hard hitting tight bass. probably shoot for 500 rms to each speaker.. thanks guys

Sounds like you are new to this game and have some misconceptions. Probably stuff you picked up from the crap local car guy. Ported boxes still hit hard and tight. I think a lot of people get twisted around the difference between low and high frequencies. Low bass tends to be smooth and rumble. High frequencies are punchy and loud. 1 15 sealed would take up slightly less space than 2 12s sealed. Maybe. Depends on teh subs. 2 12 ported would likely be slightly larger than 1 15 ported. 2 12s sealed on 500 watts each will be louder than 1 15 sealed with 500 watts. Might even be louder than the 15 sealed with 1000 watts. you have less power to each driver but overall you have more motor force and more cone area. I'd go with 2 12s on 500 each.

nice info what subs need less space? I know some subs require larger boxes than others. So what would u prefer like i said i am going to be getting a 1000watt amp so it will be about 500rms to each speaker?

The OP was asking about taking up less space. Two 15's is quite the oposite. Bad idea.

What germanyt was talking about is the differences between different subwoofers. Take two 12's that require 1.5 ft^3 each and compare them to a single 15 that requires 2.5 ft^3 sealed. The 15 is going to take up less room. But those same two 12's will take up less room than a 15 that requires 3.5 ft^3 sealed.

If you're not worried about trying to break 150 dB and you're more concerned with your sub stage sounding better while taking up less room, there are a few options. But it all depends on what you want. If you want to be in the high 140's, take the SQ and box-size portions of the pie and chop it down quite a bit.
