as ive looked into all of the above a bit (and squeak will be here shortly i presume), the problem with ribbons, is the fact that they are hard to get a good stage\image because they are more directional than horns, and the biggest problem, is people do not have 'good' places to install them in a conventional installation in practically any vehicle. that is - on the dashboard would be a great place to put them - but being a "super tweeter" i wouldnt want one that close to my head //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif they are normally, about 4" square (varies) but quite deep, deep enough that any conventional "tweeter" spot usually wont come close to working. IMO - they are more suited to HT because they are further away, can be mounted virtually anywhere, and can be imaged comparitavely eaisly.
tweeters on the otherhand, are a great little thing - but im DEFINATLY not a fan of "most" metal-dome tweeters, from the ones i have expierenced, unless installed perfectly, they tend to yield quite a bright sound - however there are some great tweeters out there, but compared to horns or ribbons, the SPL is just lacking. espically when, brian - you will have a PAIR of 15" avalanches in your trunk on 1600w (if you can fit them lol) another issue i have with tweets, is they tend to want a higher xover point, usually near 4khz or above, this tends to leave a good majority of the music on the floor, wich pulls your soundstage down quite a bit. ive heard in my friends car that all the trumpets and cymbols are level with his rear-view mirror, but most voices are mid-dash level - this can be helped with installing great kicks, but its eaiser if you just have less frequencies to worry about.
this is why i like horns. IMO - they are eaiser to install than ribbons, because they go in one spot, and more likely than not - its possible to fit them in ALOT of cars, without fabricating "the dashboard" at all - only getting some backstraps, and being imaginative with the motor //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
horns (at least mine - yes, i have
CD2 fullbody HLCD's from image dynamics) can play down to 1khz with no problems. but then again, there arise issues with horns that conventional tweeters do not pose. they do have quite the mounting issues that you have to overcome in lots of cars. they also would love to have at least an 18db\oct crossover (mine virtually REQUIRE a 24db\oct) and at LEAST a 15 band EQ (stereo please). from what ive heard thus far with my horns, and my friend CD1-E mini's, they get loud as all hell for starters, plenty to catch up with a pair of "supersub 15's" - heh, they can keep up with an inhuman 18 no problems //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif - but the best part, is they sound amazing. everyone looks at me like im an idiot - you know, one of those guys in the ghetto who stole some horns from the baseball field announcer booth and hangs it through his rear deck speaker holes with four EV's (fullrange speakers) and sony xplods in the trunk, wonderin why his head is always ringing and everyone hates to be around his car. but they sound so smooth, ive yet to have a note make me cringe when it hits yet. and imo - thats saying somthing, and you can mellow them out even more with fabric over the mouth. but horns arent for everyone.
horns arent for everyone, but for somone who is telling me they:
horns and a dedicated mid are for you. since you KNOW ology - i would wait for him and fendily to make that mid up (maybe borrow some spare mids from him in the meantime? lol!)
horns, my friend, would make you have an orgasm i believe.
