Oldschool US Amps HELP

I just installed my USA-400 today. It's rated at 1140 brided at 1ohm (it's a 2-channel). I have it wired to 1.7 ohms bridged (according to my dmm). This thing is pulling massive current when I'm not even turning it up very high. I had a Kicker KX850.2 in there, bridged at about 4 ohms (which is rated to do 850 at 4 ohms bridged) and it didn't pull NEAR as much current as my USA-400. I was getting much much louder with the Kicker and not pulling near as much current. My question is, are the old US amps known for pulling a ton of current? I really don't think the install is a problem, I've never had trouble like this. Thanks.
