Old School Clarion Speakers n Mtx Amps....the schnitzel?

Do you compete sound quality ??Is you system tuned for sound quality ?? Have you tuned your system through RTA ??

your signature does not show your head unit ... are you using time alignment and/or processing ??

If so, I'm almost sure he didn't ... It may or may not have sounded better, just different ...

Then again, I'm just educated guessing here Sir ...
I'm still working on my install ATM not to mention that the local SQ comps of his day are not really around anymore in this area anyway. Its all SPL or "how much trunk rattle can I get". and I'm not ready to go to a big competition and have my *** handed to me yet. lol

My system was tuned through RTA at one time, but it just didnt sound good for daily listening IMO. I have it set up to where I can enjoy it daily but can go back and set it up RTA if ever a real comp comes up.

I run a Pioneer AVH P3200dvd IIRC, it has sonic center control but not as much time alignment as some Hu's do. The SCC helps me to center my stage (and eliminate midbass cancellation in my car). I'm also in the process of adding a 30band EQ. I found a shop semi local to me that has o-scopes n RTAs to help me set it up since they competed as well. Gonna cost me $150 though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

You cant compare two system like that, especially when one no longer exists to reference, and only discuss brands being used. If his system really did 'murder' yours, it wasn't from the brands being used, it was from the install. If yours gets murdered, or actually murders his, its from the install. You both appear to have/had solid equipment, and imo its obvious that the biggest room for improvement (or failure) was in the install.
Your dad's install had some things going for it, and some potential problems, if Im going to judge only by the very brief description about it that you gave us here. First, small vehicle (S-10). Its tough to fit a 3-way in an S-10 and get everything right. They are small, not a lot of leg room. And, we dont know how your dad's front stage was mounted. Did he use the stock dash locations, firing up at the windshield, for his tweeters? If so, not a good sign. Did he use kick panels? Was his 3-way run active, with the 6x9's running as dedicated midbass? Or were the 6x9's another fullrange driver? The center console, assuming it was built well, it still lends itself to the concern over motor noise.

He ran the 2 6.5 coaxials in door pods as far to the front as he could get them (2 in each door) Tweeters just facing out same way as speaker. the 6x9s, I'd have to ask again to be sure but I believe he ran them full range but did let them go down lower than the 6.5s in his doors. They were in some 6x9 enclosures behind/ under his seat. (its really hard to explain because I only saw the system like once and I was too young to know or care about of any of this. so I'm going from what he remembers.) He never was one to really use the term "front stage" he always talked about more of a surround sound effect. But that the music did sound like it was coming from in front of him. I just dont see those 6x9s being very useful behind the seat. But maybe theres something I dont know.

Id also have some similar questions about your install. I dont know the vehicle, I dont know how your power/xover network is set up, and I dont know how you've mounted the speakers in your front stage. I will say this though, you posses good enough equipment that if your install was done well, and his done not as well, you should have no problem competing against the sonic performance of his setup.

Mine is in a 2010 Scion tC. My install is kind of incapacitated ATM but heres how its setup:

The front comps on the front channel of the amp running from 250hz and up Midrange in kickpanel and Tweeter mounted in dash facing upward at an angle toward listener. (probably gonna move em soon though)

The rear comps (I removed the tweeter and just use the mid and xover) is also on the front channel of the amp until I can find a small 2 channel to run them off of. or some other alternative.

The SSMB6 midbasses are in my doors. Bridged off my Boston Amp on the rear channels getting about 100rms each playing from 250hz down to about 50 (63 on some songs) They are deadened up pretty good. Seal is....meh....but I'm thinking about moving the midbasses to my kicks and moving the midrange to my doors with tweeter up on pillar facing windshield.

Convince dad to put his money where his mouth is, and build a new system that will 'murder' yours. Invite him to join ca.com too if you want. There's still some of us oldschool guys around that will be able to relate to his memory of what car audio use to be.

He has since put together a system on his golf cart that seems very nostalgic of his older ones. It consists of 2 sets of Boston SR65s. One pair is in those little holders upfront and the other pair cut into the battery part below the seat facing out towards the pedals. He has an 8inch L7 in the rear storage compartment facing up towards the listener. All run off of an Alpine PDX 5. For a golf cart, the thing sounds **** good! and alot of the locals are going crazy since he hasnt built a system in so long. He will even make little jokes at me sometimes about how my mids and highs dont wanna see his. But I just wouldnt feel right doing that. All of his stuff is basically playing into open air compared to mine in a car. I've been trying to get him to run a system in his current car or truck but he's not budging.

Cheers.

tell your dad to quit smoking his nostalgia......
done numerous times. I just wish that system was still around. I've put alot of effort into getting good midbass in my system and I think I'm doing pretty good with that part. He never even talks about midbass but he did always have a set of 6x9s in every install of his. Maybe that was why he never had to worry about it....hmmm...

Being a old schooler myself, and to be honnest, I've had plenty of 6x9s back in the day (and competed with them). Sounded very dynamic, clear, accurate, and took massive power (full bandpass 2 channel amps) ... I kinda wish they still made them like they use to ...

I had a pair of JVC 6x9s in the doors of my old 71 Ford in high school on a Linear Power 3002 (this was back in 1987) ... I couldn't tear them things up ... Blasted many of bon fires and parties with them things ...

Dont get me wrong now, I love 6x9s especially for the midbass you can get out of em pretty easily. I had a pair of the old school JL Audio Evolution TR series 6x9s that sounded very good!! I just never got around to making custom panels for em so I sold em to my cousin for $30 since he blew his infinitys. Installed em for him, he never paid me and got his car repoed the next week with the speakers still in it! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif Needless to say I'll never help him with audio again.

Its pretty hard to find a bad sounding set of 6 x 9's. I've had everything from low end Jensen and Sony to higher end Polk Audio and Alpine (currently using) and they all sounded great. I'm even using 'dreaded' 3-way Alpines Type S right now that sound fantastic. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif They are only 6-7 years old now.

I've been into CA since around 94 and find that the older equipment sounded better at lower-moderate volume. The newer equipment can generally take more power so it gets louder, while still sounding OK. My older equipment sounded better in a lot of ways, but just couldn't crank as loud. Don't get me wrong, there are systems that could blow most modern systems out of the water that were made in the 80's. Mainly Wayne Harris' Terminator Old School SPL Competition Vehicles

The 90's saw a huge increase in amp manufactures, and advances in power. This is when I started seeing the 'surfboard' amps like the PPI's and Soundsteam's. That's when everything started getting really loud, but didn't necessarily sound better. MTX amps and subs were very reliable for their time. A friend of mine ran all MTX substage and was the loudest kid in our area. JL Audio was just getting popular and still sound great to this day. Another friend had all JL and it was definitely better SQ. I chose SoundStream and haven't heard much better Sounding equipment to this day, and that was in '95-97. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It was also only 500-watts, which was a fair amount of power at the time. lol

i was building systems in the mid 90's so you will get my 2 cents, lol

mids ar all about placement and staging. i can make a $50 componet set sound better than most average installers can with a $500 set from experience its not age or $.

mtx amps were the *****, they were designed to outperform the legendary punch series and they DID. i switched from RF amps to MTX back then.

and yea clarion and clarion pro audio had great headunits and eq's thats it! kinda like kenwood love there headunits buts thats the only thing from them i would buy..

I will disagree w/a few here. The OS coax speakers by Clarion were not all that great, but their component sets were d@mn good. My wife is a sleep right now so I can't get to the brochure to look up the models I'm talking about. They are from '95 though, so I'm not sure if you're referring to ones pre '95.

I am a hard core Clarion collector/fan, but I will admit their short comings, so please don't think that what I say is 100% biased, it's not.
