I have a 1995 M3 and my rear seats fold down so that solves the problem for me, but there are many options depending on what kind of sound you are looking for. You could remove your rear speakers and that would allow the sound to vent into the cabin you could get IB subs and mount them to your rear deck. You could cut your rear deck and get it refabricated. You could mount subs in the back quarter panels if you don't mind doing glass work. There are tons of options depends on what kind of sound you are looking for. Let me know.

well i'm a huge techno/trance fan... and i need the sharpest and tightest bass i can find... so i'm probably lookin' at getting a couple (if not only one) 10" subs... have gotten a few different opinions so i'm still considering exactly what i'm gonna need... an enclosure or open mount??? i guess you guys are here to help me with that... :-D

i was also wondering if i could get like a 10" somehow centered in the chassis and then put another 12" to remotely switch on when i play some hiphop or rap...
Not familiar with your car but I am sure that there is not much room under the seats, If you dont want to do anything really extreme then I would think your best bet would be to put the subs in the trunk and cut big holes in the rear deck or if you already have factory speakr location in the rear deck then remove the speakers so the sound can travel from the trunk to the cab, and you can always cover the holes with spkr grills. Then upgrade the front soundstage with a kick as component set with a nice am on them and that will more than make up for the rear fill being gone.
You might check into fiberglass, I have seen some pretty cool things done with that, like building a console that has a concealed subwoofer in it.

well this is what i was thinking so far with my stereo setup not including subs... i wanna put quart q series 5.25 component up front with a sony cdx-m800 deck... and then bore out the back deck and fit 2 pioneer 6x9 TS-A6990R 5-way speakers... somehow all interlaced with a moderate amp... i just want a sub(s) to give a kick so that you can really feel the music... i'm guessin the high end will be covered with the 5-way speakers and the quart components... i was also thinking that maybe just get a 5 or 6 channel amp and tune it to put most power into the sub while supplying the 4 speakers with just enough power to hit the high notes...
They often are, and you probably don't want to cut that, it's structural...
Even though I'm sure you could get away with cutting some out of there without compromising much integrity, the BMW's are known for their rigid chassis and that greatly contributes to their status as a "drivers car"... you'd also no doubt be compromising your resale value...
So I can understand what you are saying.
Unfortunately, installing 10's under your seats will be difficult, without cutting holes and welding in "wells" under your floor, which again can carry all the compromises i mentioned above.
If I were you, I'd check out Blaupunkt's new "Saucer" subwoofers. They are only about as deep as a AA battery is tall, and while the installation might be tricky and/or expensive, you could most likely fit then under the seats if you built shallow fiberglass enclosures under the seats.
Not only that, it would be trick, and it would be loud...
I've heard the saucer's myself, I was lucky enough to hear them in a Ford truck at DLC designs.. not only the home of DUMAX (David Clark being the inventor, DLC is his lab facility //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif), but also co-developers of this fantastic sub... here's some pics of my visit - and the Blau Saucers:

Anyone know if there are any electronics hidden below the front seats on BMW 3-series? That would compromise the available space for a sub enclosure, even 'glass...

I think you should just get an amp with a remote gain control.

There's many reasons you don't want to mix sizes/brands of subwoofers in a single install.
I generally advise against rear speakers, there are many acoustical reasons that you don't want speakers that are:1) behind you
2) of varying pathlengths (distances) to your head
3) of different tonalities

looks pretty cool... must be deadly costly tho... i've seen a few pics of a single 10" being mounted in the rear center arm rest fold-down thingy... not in the the actual arm rest... but in the space where it fits... looks pretty wicked... but don't know how it sounds... and it's an open installation... no enclosure... i'm so confused... lol :-D

Do you haev a ski hole in your back seats or do they flip down? Second i have the quart 3 ways and they are wonderful, if your goign to get 5 1/4 in comps you need to get custom kicks made if your car have the same speaker set up as mine. 2 little speakers int eh door and one by your foot. The imaging with the 5 and 1/4 in the floor is horrible. So either get custom kicks made or get the quart 3 ways if your not worried about spending the cash for speakers that are made for your car. AS for the subs, you said you like techno and trance so you like the beats but you also said you wanted to be able to turn it up with hip hop and rap to get hte low notes. If money is not an issue leave out the rear speakers you won't need them with good quality fronts get 2 high quality 10's posibly even 1 if you don't want tons of bass. I woudl reccomend JL w7's, Eclipse TI's, ED O's.

i'm gonna fit the 5.25 comps in the door... it'll take a little work but i don't want any extra stuff anywhere... know what i mean?? and i def want the high's and low's in the entire car... not just high's in the front and low's in the back...
Well LOWs or bass, is non directional so you won't know where the sound is comming from if done properly, just like a home theater if the sub is set properly you won't be able to tell where the sound is comming from. Highs on the other hand are directional. I have speakers in my rear and sometime i play my music without them but it is a personal prefrence it makes it harder to get the sound to your ears at the same time and requires work to haev a good SQ set up. But for the bass, JL makes a stealth box it has 2 8in IB/subs that mount in your rear deck. http://www.jlaudio.com

i'm thinkin to get an electronic x-over to add to the mix so i only have to use one amp to power the whole system... the x-over can be adjusted so that 4 channels of a 6 channel amp can be high's for the speakers and 2 channels can be low's for the subs... i dunno if i'm gettin' this right... but if i'm not... lemme know... also are audiobahn amps any good?? i see a 6 channel 600 watt amp on ebay for like $250... looks like a good deal for a moderate system (like i want)... i'm not lookin to spend more than about 700 on my whole system...
