Setting the gain by ear is done playing music. Not tones.

I've heard that. The reason I have been using tones is that there is (typically) a VERY identifiable point where distortion can be heard. I don't get that when listening to music, at least not as black and white as a single tone.

I guess if I'm going to try to use the tone, I should open the sub and connect my scope to the speaker so I can see what's going on (since I can't hear it, it seems).
