Imma tell you now, from PERSONAL expieriences....i know a kid what did that exact same crap, wrong measurements...but his was close to an inch... so, we took it down, and made it come all the way back, 1" from the rear wall...

1 huge whistle. Absolutely no bass. woofer moved like no tomorrow, but produced nothing. stuff shakes on car, no bass. LOL. Yeah, a designed box is best. If failed in design, dont modify.
