not typical "alt whine"....

well my alternator whine is coming directly from the alt, i think anyways. When the car is at idle it makes this humming sound and up to im gonna say about 1500 rpm the sound increases in pitch with the increase in engine speed. I know its not coming from my speakers as its louder outside, there also a strange "hot" smell once the cars been driven even short distances. Is my alt on the verge of failure?

well i think its toast, if the car even starts i get like 7-9 volts at the post while its running and eventually it totally dies....this is just beautiful

what kind of voltage are you getting on the battery?

at the battery i was getting like 11.8 while running then around 12 while off (idk?) then directly on the alt positive post at idle all the way up to about 1500rpm i would get like 12.8
