Noob here...WTF?

Greetings. I am brand new here. Is this a forum where I can get help on the frickin' rewiring of my STOCK head unit's wire harness(!)? (Yes, it's exactly what you are thinking. I admit, I am an idiot that did an idiot move.)

And, if it is that kinda forum, is this the right room? Or should I go to "General Discussion"? Or is there a room for idiots.

Thank you in advance,

Mark

****, I wish it was red to red easy. Remember I said I was an idiot? Here's why---> I thought I was going to install a new head unit in my 2005 Sorento so I CUT the wires to the wire harness. I cut them SHORT (!) so I could have more wire to work with...(see the idiot part?) I got a new OEM wire harness for my car (Metra 71-2003-1). The colors don't match. I've searched the web, trying to figure out what each wire/color does. Gotten four different answers. Some of them speak of connecting colors I don't even have in my bundle! I have successfully connected the ground (black, duh), the constant 12V (green) and the ignition/switched (green w/orange stripe). All I get is a sound from the CD player cycling on or whatever it's doing. no other signs of life from the head unit. I've recorded all the colors of all the wires in my car wire bundle and my new Metra harness but I will wait for a request before posting them. so yeah, I've made it more complicated than red to red and black to black. Sorry.

Thank you in advance,

Mark

How short are they? At the nub? A little solder and shrink tube if you have enough room to work with. Send some pics.

Put the new clip and the old clip side by side then use the old clip to match the new clip by color. For example top row on old clip = green , blue , red ect. so pretend the top row on the new clip uses the same colors so if clip 2 had purple yellow white for first 3 just pretend it has green , blue , red just like the old one.

You might need to invest in a good cheap DMM to get your wires straight...Walmart has a nice digital one for about $20 in the vehicle electrical section ...
I have one. A few of the wires show 0.036-0.062 volts. Of course, the 12V constant shows just that. But the meter does me no good if I don't know what I'm looking for in THAT wire.

I hope this helps.....

Radio 12v green + radio harness

Radio Ground black - radio harness

Radio Ignition green/orange + radio harness

Radio Illumination red/black + radio harness

Factory Amp Turn-on

Power Antenna N/A

LF Speaker +/- brown - black +,- radio harness or amp under driv seat

RF Speaker +/- green/orange - blue/orange +,- radio harness or amp under driv seat

LR Speaker +/- green - blue +,- radio harness or amp under driv seat

RR Speaker +/- blue - yellow +,- radio harness or amp under driv seat

Louisiana CRX---your specs look familiar. On my Metra harnesses (they sent me two), I have TWO orange wires that are stamped "Dash Light Illumination". (one on each bundle) I connected that to my red/black wire, thinking it would turn on my radio digits or something but...no such luck....

cutting the harness may of blown some radio or other fuses...you can ground your meter black lead...then check the green wire for 12+vs connect it to the yellow radio lead if working then turn key on and check the green wire with orange stripe...it should power up...if so connect to red wire on deck...you can turn on parking lights to check the red and black to see if working...and connect to radio orange...then switch meter off dc volts to continuity..then check the black for ground...then connect the black lead...if any of these wires arnt working check the radio fuses on your vehicle in the fuse box...the owners manual should show location

Wow. Okay, I'll do all that. I've already changed a couple of fuses that I had blown. You said "Connect to red on deck" (I'm assuming "connect red to black"?) if I turn on the parking lights, what's suppose to happen? Do I get 12V on my multi-meter?

Louisiana CRX wrote "and connect to radio orange...then switch meter off dc volts to continuity...then check the black for ground...then connect the black lead... "

Say what?? What happens when I connect to radio orange? There are TWO oranges that that labeled "radio". Which one? And "check black for ground." There are two of those, too! Which one? And on the car side or new harness side? connect which black lead to what?

Thanks in advance---Mark

I may be confused on this...are you putting an aftermarket deck in or the factory deck back in ? I was thinking you were hooking up an aftermarket radio ...

I'm putting the factory radio back in. Originally, I was going to install an aftermarket radio but it would not fit in the space allotted. When I realized there wasn't enough clearance, I was going to put the old back in until I got the correct head unit and---here we are.
