No load, what should the voltage be when testing?

well i dont have my sub to hook up to my mojo, so i dont have a reactive load for the amp. However when i hook the amp up play music i have voltage on the terminals that fluctuates with the music. this is good.............

..........but with what would be full volume for that amp my voltage is only like 6 or 7 volts tops. my question is, without a reactive load, is this normal for the volatage to be so small? i have no idea if it's supposed to be relativly low (averaging 1-6 volts) or higher (30-80volts like normal)...

by the end of the day im gonna try and find someone's subs to hook this up to and see what my voltage reads. but i want to make sure this small voltage is normal with no load in the amp.....

not normal.
You should have higher voltage.

Think about it this way.

When you set the gains with a dmm do you have a sub hooked up?
no, no sub....this is just the voltage on the terminals with no woofer hooked up.

You need a load to *test* the amp.

If you want to check for DC offset, then try.

1. Turn off amp.

2. Set your DMM to DC volts

3. DMM connects to the speaker terminals.

4. Unplug the RCA cables from the amp.

5. Turn on the amp.

You should read very low DC volts, maybe 0.1 volts or less.

If you were to read very high voltage, your amp is toast.

He is testing the voltage on the speaker terms on the amp and the dmm should be set to ac not dc.

Also his voltage should be alot higher then 0.1 volts

yes im testing the speaker terminals...forgot to specify that. the MAX voltage im getting is like 10 volts, and thats with the gain high and the deck past full volume. ive tried differant HU's and the signal is good, the wiring is fine..... but the amp is only showing 6-10 volts with it full volume. i talked to a local amp repair place and they said my voltage on the terminals should be a normal 30+volts. im gonna get this hooked up to a load asap and see how it reacts. im praying memphis amps have something in them to see there's no load and ths no much voltage...but that makes NO SENSE...

i think i got a bunk amp.

FOUND THE PROBLEM

i have a universal remote knob for the bass that goes inline in the rca's. it also allows for the adjustment of the center freq. i had that center freq set to like 50hz, but when i moved that center freq up to 150Hz (as high as it goes), the output signal was normal and the amp it putting out the voltage it should..

Glad you figured it out.

I showed a procedure on how to test for DC offset and that procedure is correct in spite that is not what he wanted to do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
