Nissan Almera CD Changer

I have a 2001 Nissan Almera with an in dash clarion 6 cd changer. The laser seems to have gone on it so i have got hold of an identical changer but when i swapped them over there is a continuous beeping noise. My local nissan garage did not know why but decided to try recoding the keys but have now decided that these units are car specific and cannot be changed into a different vehicle.

Does anyone know if it is possible and how?
