i have a set each of pioneer 6.5 3-ways, and 6x8 3-ways. they are hooked to a pioneer hu. any way to make these sound decent? how well do they work with an amp pushin them?

just read the user manual, find the rms power of them, hook them up to an amp that gives that much and see if you like it?

As a general rule most speakers sound better amped appropriately than they do being run directly from a head unit.

Some speakers do not.
