New to subwoofers need some help

I recently bought 2 12" sony xplod subs for my f150 (98' single cab)

and a 1000 watt amp...

my friend had the setup in his truck and i liked how it sounded so i figured it would be a good idea for me to go for the same thing since it isnt really that expensive...

my dad and i built the first box for it today... the measurements were supposed to be

19 3/4, 14 5/8, and 8 3/4...(inches)

wel im 100% sure that we arent exactly on that because we arent expert woodcraftsmen... but i think we did a fairly decent job... it wasnt all nice and pretty but i made sure we sealed both inside and outside up super tight with silicon ( i know it has to dry very good )

im wondering a few questions...

A. Is it going to matter if the measurements arent exact...

B. How much polyfil should i add to the box if any?

C. What can i do to fix it if its to small

D. Last and not least...

What the heck is the thing called that you put on the box that lets the wiring in but air cant get out... i dont know what its called and ive been trying to find out... i would like to know so i dont go around asking hey do you have the thingy magigger and they are like uhhh... uhh no...

Thanks

Well it's too late because you already made the purchase but how much did they cost? Your measurements don't have to be exact. Sealing all the joints is a good idea. Not sure what you mean by the box being too small. If it's too small obviously you'd have to build another one.

A - not so much in a sealed enclosure, bu ti am a perfectionist so that goes without saying

B - depends if you like the sound. if you want deeper bass, then add enough to fill about 1/4 of the box at a time, loosely fittiing

C - add polyfill.. it slows down the waves tio an extent

D - its called a wire terminal

thank you very much!

im going to go get the stuff today ill give you some heads up...

by the box being to small i mean by a few 1/4 of inches or so maybe a few square inches not sure... but i think that a little bit of poly will do the job.

im so excited, thanks guys

walmart didnt have a terminal (sadface)

so im gonna go to audio edge tomorow after school with the credit card...

were taking one of the subs back if just one sounds fine...

can anyone give me a link for a good first time installation of everything? ( amp and subs )

thanks

um, don't you have two holes for subs now?

did you get a mono or a 2 chan amp? you will prolly toast your sony if it's a mono, and be wasting watts if it's a 2 channel amp.

also, you can run the wires into the box if you just cut a hole, no need for terminals. get better connections too.

i have a two channel amp from sony...

would it be best to use both subs or just one sub? they max out at 1200 watts and the amp is 1000 watts...

i hear two is still better than one because your moving more air...

opinion anyone?

i think i may need to get a bigger 2/1 channel amp... or maybe buy another one of those amps? any suggestions would be great

in that case you will probably toast both... if you can, take everything that has sony on it back. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/waycrazy.gif.f4a380c3f94043939fd369defd9e6be2.gif

how would i toast my subs with an amp that has 200 watts less than the max on the subs especially if i used one amp for two subs?

not to be mean about this or degrading. just laying out the truth.

the reason is the choice of your equipment is about bottom of the barrel. it's severely overrated. their amps couldn't put out the power they claimed if you hooked them up direct to PG&E and their subs they added an extra digit when it comes to power handling.

if you got a good deal and are happy with the performance, great. but don't expect any where near world class performance.

It's amazing how helpful we are not sometimes around here. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

1) the xPlod line is manufactured for Sony by Jensen

2) xPlod in general are over-rated, and under-built

That "1000 watt" amp doesn't have the *** for a thousand good watts.

3) Your misunderstanding about blowing the subs when you "don't even have enough power" is a common one; It's also difficult to explain, but here's the quick and dirty:

You can blow a NICE thousand watt speaker with a CHEAP 200 watt amp. How is that possible??! Alternating Currents make the subwoofer move; When an amp is turned up too high, it creates breif periods of Direct Current.

In speakers, DC only creates heat.

Watts is a thermal measurement.

A 200 "watt" amp can create much more than 200 watts of heat. The rating is to relate the amp's maximum clean output - you can still exceed that measurement, but you will have clipped output; That's what blows woofers.

4) Yes, I would return the equipment; Because as a consumer, I am offended by the misleading advertising. The company is taking advantage of your lack of knowledge.
