If i was looking for a windows based machine to have similar performance to the 2.0ghz macbook, what would i be looking at spending, and what might be an example of something i should check out?

DDR3 is the only thing that makes that so expensive. Just go with DDR2, I say.

Im sure any laptop with similar specs will be fine. Macs are generally overpriced for what you actually get I think.
