I want to rekey the locks in my car. I will be leaving the original key for the ignition. How can I get a different key?

Go to a salvage yard? Would getting the VIN off of a for sale ad online and having that key cut be illegal?

Why are you wanting to rekey your door locks?

I would just have the current locks rekeyed.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. But if you get a VIN number and go to a dealer to look up the key code and cut you a key, they're gonna ask proof of ownership to the vehicle with the new VIN.

You have a locksmith put new pins in the lock and cut the correct key by code.

Sorry, but I'm not gonna pay a locksmith if I can find a new key and get it done for free
