When hooking up a new amp should you take off the negative terminal on the battery before you start or does it matter?

you should, but it doesn't really matter. the current will arch once you touch power to the amp, but that's about it.

as long as you are careful its not really a necessity. if anything you could run all your wires but leave the positive connection to your battery unhooked until you are completely finished. That way your never dealing with any live wires.
