Need some help deciding on speakers/subs/amp

So I'm interested in putting some new speakers/subs in my car and I need some help on how I go about finding the right speakers. And just general information on the subject.

I have a 2008 Honda Civic LX Sedan, right now I have stock speakers installed.

Basically I'm just wondering how I decide on the right speakers; I need to be pointed in the right direction, if anyone could do that I'd be very thankful. My budget is around $500 if that helps. If you need any more information let me know and I'll get back to you asap.
