Alright, Thursday night I was using my computer and it was just fine. Friday evening I go to start it up, and it beeps at me, and beeps at me, and beeps at me. Just a single beep; "beeep", only it does it repeatatively every few seconds.

WTF //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blow_up.gif.f2a780e8b12ae09e264cb01720b8dca2.gif Is that a beep code or is it just my computer being stupid? It won't start up at all, won't even get to the point where it turns my monitor on. As soon as it powers up it does that **** beep thing.

Any help? What the hell could the problem be??? Think it was a hardware failure, or is it possible that I had a virus that corrupted my harddrive or something else software related??

I'm pretty good at computers.....but this one has me baffled.

That beep is telling you something is not connected inside the case or something has failed and is no longer working. No a virsus, worm, and etc. could not do this. If your good with computers, borrow a friends computer and unplug one card or dievice at time and replace the part with one friends computer, restart the computer and see if it still beeps. If it does not then you found your broken part, call up the computer support for your machine and have it replaced. If it does beep, then take your friends part out place your back in and go to another card or dievice. If you do this for every card and dievice and you still get a beep then your motherboard is screwed. Unless you are sure you know what you are doing dont mess with motherboard, just call your computer support.

P.S. if you have a ibm first check the capasitors and see if they are swollen or leaking, ibm have this problem.

The beeping usually happens ur ur computer is running POST(power on self test) This goes thru and tests all ur periphials. Like the guy said above, more than 1 single beep means something is wrong. Try to find out what bios u run and look up the beep codes for ur bios on google.

for example, 1 bios setup may be that 2 beeps means ur monitors not connected. 3 beeps may mean that something else isnt connected. thats all i can tell u

Thanks guys!!

This isn't any specific brand computer.....it's one I built myself. So there isn't really any tech support to call (unless I wanted to call each and every manufacturer who's product I have in my PC).

And yeah, I'm good enough with computers that I can try switching out components till it works. I put this one together in my basements //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I was just hoping and praying that it wasn't my HDD.......fried MB or RAM and I'm OK with it......but I can't lose my HDD.

And I know it isn't my video card, because that is 2 beeps right in a row; "beep beep" (had that problem before). But I'm only getting one beep this time (but it continually beeps at me until I power down the PC).

look around on the net. It will beep some many times. 2 beeps means etc. 3 beeps etc. so you need to know what your mother board is, find out how many times it beeps. And that should tell you, your problem. My guess would be a fan shit out or your hard drive quit, But look into your fans first.

how many sticks of ram u got>? pull 1 if you got more than 1 and try to start it up then as well. I had this problem once.

It's a long shot, but I have seen this happen before when CMOS fails.

Sometimes, a simple CMOS Battery swap will do it.

Other than that, just make sure everything is seated properly in it's slots.

As mentioned allready, if POST fails, it's generally a hardware issue. That only leaves so many potential culprits.

Likely you are using either a Phoenix or Award Bios, as they are the two primary BIO's suppliers today. You will have to look at your Mobo documentation to determine this for sure.

I run an Aopen motherboard (don't know model # off of the top of my head), not sure if anyone knows off hand what bios they run //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hmmm.....gonna have to pop my PC open tonight, cause I can't remember right now how many physical sticks of RAM I have............

You don't have to replace the components really, first try taking everything out but the bare minimum to run yoru computer, HD, RAM, Video Card, and try to startit up that way, reseat everything and make sure its in there good. Also reseat the CPU. I also just searched for Award bios codes because I believe thats what AOpen uses, It says infinite beeps is a memory error, so just reseat that. Here is the site. http://bioscentral.com/beepcodes/awardbeep.htm

Good Luck.

Hey, that's exactly what I have, repeating endless loop //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Thanks!

FYI

As others have said the beeps are POST errors. You take the error and look it up and it will tell you the problem. Most common error missing/incorrect memory or video card. These items may be installed but not be seated properly.

RAM is what that beep code you described usually is but it does depend on the manufacturer.

If your HD were bad you would get an "Invalid system disk" error.

Try taking out the ram, and then reseating it, this sometimes works for me, also the cmos reset option was mentioned, this is also a good idea to try, either pop out the battery and then put it back in, or look for the jumper that is on the mobo in the general area of the battery, switch it to the other two pins, press the power button, and then switch the jumper back to the original pins it was on.

this has worked for me before, but i have a different mobo.

good luck, i hope you get it fixed.

you do not have to try and power on the PC to reset the bios.

just take that little battery out, and it will clear the RAM settings on the small bios ram chip (same as turning off your computer and loosing unsaved information)

or you can switch the jumper. do it as fast as you like, it will only take the amount of time it takes you to slide the jumper on then off again to reset the bios. set them back to the origional setting ... then restart.

make sure the cmoputer is completly off when ya do that rofl.

but try swapping the ram. thats what it sounds like to me. ram is a tricky beast. and in my oppinion... ram dosnt like to serve the end user. its like that law "objects at rest stay at rest..." ram is this "ram at rest, wants to stay at rest"

i dunno why, but most problems got to do with ram just being a crappy brand. i would recommend using kingston\corsair\mushkin\crucial\GEIL next time you build a system. all lifetime warranties, and they overclock well.

buy your PC hardware at http://www.newegg.com

but like i said. try swapping your ram, or using one chip at a time in all the slots. that should help.

keep us posted.

Thanks guys!! Unfortunately, with school and work (where I am now), it will be until 10pm tonight before I get a chance to try fixing it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

But while I am down at school I was going to pick up a stick or two of RAM and seeing what happens tonight.

WoooooooooHoooooooooo!!!!

Thanks guys! I switched out the RAM and now she's up and running again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
