need help

does the gain setting correlate with the HU output voltage?...do you have a line driver? What is your signal chain? Hu?, LD?, amp?
what do you mean correlate with the hu?,,signal chain?,,,,, the amp is an ap3000 and a sony cd player and clarion eq,, sub is zcon 15

well, lets see, the whole purpose of setting gains is to match each component to the incoming pre-out voltage to avoid clipping the signal chain. I assume the HU vol. was set to about %75 and the Clarion EQ and HU EQ was set to flat? Does the Clarion EQ have it's own volume level adjustment? How about the Clarion EQ gains? where are they set?

To break it down, the HU sends x amount of unclipped votage to the Clarion. The Clarion should have an input gain adjustment to match it to the HU output voltage. The Clarion should also have an adjustable output voltage level that is either a switch or a pot that can raise the RCA output voltage . Then finally, the amplifier has a gain adjustment to allow you to match the amp to the incoming pre-amp voltage from the EQ.

Set all eq levels to flat when setting the gains. These adjustments on the clarion are probably in the top of the case of the unit. You really need to research and study the equipment your are trying to use. The reason you are seeing such high voltage at the amp outs with the gain all the way down is because you are sending a higher voltage to the amp's inputs than the gain can compensate for. The reason for all this flexibility is to keep the signal from being clipped. If all of your eq settings are flat, and you still do not have room for gain adjustment, you should lower the Clarion EQ output voltage to a level that will allow at least a little adjustment at the amplifier.

With the equipment and power you are using, you really should track down an O-scope, or similar device to ensure the signal fed to the amp is not being clipped.

Yo, quack - let's make sure he's not using an auto ranging DMM and reading millivolts lol
