Need help tuning my amplifier with multimeter

I've watched numerous youtube videos about setting gains using a voltmeter. However I can't for the life of me get my meter to make a reading on my speaker terminals. I play a 1kHz tone with my headunit at 60% volume, speaker wires removed, no crossover, no bass boost. All headunit settings set to normal.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

my headunit is: JVC KD-R200 CD receiver at Crutchfield.com

my amplifier is: MB Quart OA800.4 800W Max Onyx Series Stereo Power Amplifier

First, I assume you're setting speakers (1000 hz) and not subs, right?

Second, are you sure you have AC volts selected on your meter?

Temporarilly connect your speakers and make sure you're actually getting output from the amp (you'll hear a tone). If you know it's working, switch to 400 Hz instead of 1000 - some cheap DMM's don't respond to 1000 Hz.
