i would definitely say heat killed your hard drive, time for a new iPod, although then again my 30gig iPod does the same thing in my car and I live in Florida so maybe not...

heat alone cant hurt it. it would have to be running in extremely hot conditions. my ipod is not on when its that hot in my car. also, it was working perfectly not even an hour before when i was driving home from my buddys. and it was really cool out tonight too.

how do you delete itunes from your registry? i already uninstalled it.

also, just to clarify, i got the ipod here and it appears to work perfectly fine (no errors on the screen or anything). the only issue is that itunes keeps saying its in recovery mode. wouldnt it say that or have some other error on the ipod itself if it were truly in recovery mode?
