Ok.. so my trial is coming up for my speeding ticket. The one that says I did 84 in a 55 (when I was passing a car). I was thinking about it, and I don't believe it's physically possible for my car to do this.

I was going to go about proving this by illustrating both situations in which my car could get up to that speed, and disproving both, but I need some mathematical and mechanical help.

The two situations that I could reach 84 miles from passing a car are thus:

Either I was going at a speed fast enough that I could hit 84mph in the 7 seconds it took to pass, OR I spent (x) amount of seconds to get up to the 84 mph.

I'm guessing that the first would require me to be going quite fast in order to jump up to 84 mph in 7 seconds (keeping in mind it would be from 2nd gear up) and the later I could disprove by saying it would take me enough time that I would be well past the cop by the time I actually hit that speed (he was 3rd in the line of cars on the other side).

Here are the physical specs of my car FROM EDMUNDS.COM ( http://www.edmunds.com/used/2001/dodge/intrepid/100000795/specs.html )

Horsepower: 201 hp

Max Horsepower: 5900 rpm

Torque: 193 ft-lbs.

Max Torque: 4300 rpm

There's GOT to be some mathematical way that I can use those numbers to get answers to the following math problems:

1) How many seconds would it take to go from 55mph to 84mph (from 2nd gear up)

2) How fast would I have to be going to begin with to get to 84 mph in 7 seconds (from 2nd gear up)

I just don't know how to put the numbers together!

of course it's not.. bu we're not talking about a 30 mph jump in first gear.. we're talking about a 30 mph jump in 2/3rd gear. It will only be in 2nd till about 60 mph, then it drops to 3rd

you should test it. I'm talking going at a constant 55 mph and kicking it up to 85 in 7 seconds. As in, you have be to GOING 55... start the time, and kick it to 85.

dude,DO NOT even bother to try and fight that. The smarter you sound the smart assier you'll come off as. I went to court with pictures proving me right and i had another officer on my side but when i got to the judge i still lost. DOnt waste your time, youll get a bigger fine and have a bad day.

your not gonna be able to fight it, also to figure it otu there is too many variables. first youd need ot give us gear ratios. how fast it took to downshift from cruising gear to accelerating. then with that you could figure it out in a perfect world cenario. now your car will not do that unless everything is perfect. also the road conditions tire pressure and all of that will effect it. bassicially just pleade guilty and take the fines and points

arguing that its imposiable for your car to do that speed will not bring any good. and EVEN if your math is right with all the variables and everything they will think you are a punk and trying to prove them wrong and just say there was a hill

Also, from the information you gave you can't figure out how long it will take you to jump to 84 MPH. There are many other factors that you have left out, and honestly I don't know if it is even possible to account for all of them.
