The Drunken Snowman
Ok.. so my trial is coming up for my speeding ticket. The one that says I did 84 in a 55 (when I was passing a car). I was thinking about it, and I don't believe it's physically possible for my car to do this.
I was going to go about proving this by illustrating both situations in which my car could get up to that speed, and disproving both, but I need some mathematical and mechanical help.
The two situations that I could reach 84 miles from passing a car are thus:
Either I was going at a speed fast enough that I could hit 84mph in the 7 seconds it took to pass, OR I spent (x) amount of seconds to get up to the 84 mph.
I'm guessing that the first would require me to be going quite fast in order to jump up to 84 mph in 7 seconds (keeping in mind it would be from 2nd gear up) and the later I could disprove by saying it would take me enough time that I would be well past the cop by the time I actually hit that speed (he was 3rd in the line of cars on the other side).
Here are the physical specs of my car FROM EDMUNDS.COM ( http://www.edmunds.com/used/2001/dodge/intrepid/100000795/specs.html )
Horsepower: 201 hp
Max Horsepower: 5900 rpm
Torque: 193 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 4300 rpm
There's GOT to be some mathematical way that I can use those numbers to get answers to the following math problems:
1) How many seconds would it take to go from 55mph to 84mph (from 2nd gear up)
2) How fast would I have to be going to begin with to get to 84 mph in 7 seconds (from 2nd gear up)
I just don't know how to put the numbers together!
