I have an issue with alternator whine in my audio system. I have been researching this in my regular car forum, with kicker tech support, and google. I thought I'd try asking some audioheads. This is how I've got everything set up.
2001 Bonneville SE - Base audio, not bose, no factory amp
Factory head unit - (will not replace due to cost/asthetics)
front: Factory tweeters, Memphis PR 6.5s
rear: Memphis PR 6x9s, Memphis PR 12" sub - sealed enclosure
amplifier: Kicker zx700.5 amp - This is a FIVE channel amp consisting of two AB class amps for the front and rear channels and a third D class amp for the sub. The amp has two SPEAKER LEVEL INPUT channels hooked up. One is from the front r/l tapped at the kick panels under the dash. The other is r/l tapped at the 6x9s in the rear deck. This supplies input signal for amp1 (front channel), amp2 (rear channel), and the two channels are combined internally (mono) for the amp3 (sub channel). The signal from the front and rear channels is then routed back to the corresponding speakers.
POWER:
the amplifier power wires are 4ga and go directly to the POS+ and NEG- posts on the battery (under rear seat). The remote is tapped off a 12v ACC line.
THE PROBLEM:
I get alternator whine. This is easily drowned out but really annoying at lower volumes. I have tried unhooking the speaker level inputs and run the amp off my ipod through the rca ins and it sounds great with NO WHINE. I have also run the entire amp off of just the front SLIs or the rear SLIs. The whine was a little quieter but still there. So the source of the whine is the factory head unit.
MY QUESTION:
what can I do to give the factory deck a better ground? The OEM HU is connected with a ribbon cable in the back so I cant just tap in with a better ground. What can I do to eliminate the noise?
Thanks
