Hey everyone,

Im looking to buy my first sub and i want to spend somewhere in the low 100s on the sub only and I am not sure what to get or what half of the stats mean on the pages i look at when shopping. I just wrecked my honda crv but im getting a 2006 honda civic in the next month. ive got an after-market radio (Kenwood) and after-market speakers (Alpine 6.5 in). i dont have some big shot audio system obviously, but i think subs would really bring out the best of my system, however good that may be.

Any input helps! Thanks so much....

I actually dont get my car until the end of May so i have some time but would like advice qick because i want to go ahead ad purchase the sub as soo as i can... plus ive saved up bc my parents dont want me getting it (gota buy online lol)

no i am 16 i just put 21 incase their are complications with age on this website or some bull restrictions....

i dont have an amp but i want something around 500 watts rms

itll be going into the trunk of a newer honda civic so i got room if thats what your asking. i was looking at a couple listings on ebay and here they are (let me know what you think):

Alpine SWR 1042D Type R 10" sub with dual voice coil (in a box)

2 Diamond D3 10" subs in box

2 Kenwood 10" subs and box (it says 1000 watt rms but i think this guy is mistaken... doesnt sound right to me but does it to you??) maybe 1000watt is max

2 12" pioneer subs in box (enclosure powered). rms watt is 800

there isnt a whole lot of info on the listings but i like the alpine the best because its not too big for my trunk and i read great reviews on it.

what do you guys think?

If I were you, I'd search around on craigslist.

Usually a pair of Kicker CVR's can be found for very cheap.

kicker cvr's are well built speakers, practically everyone has had one or two at one point in time. Its pretty much the standard sub to start with.

Type R's are louder than the cvr's, but cost a bit more as well. You should be able to get 2 cvr's w/ a sealed box on craigslist for around $100-$150.

If you like listening to rap music, I'd recommend having a ported box built by someone to the specifications of your subwoofers.

If you like listening to things other than rap, get a sealed box, anyone who took a year of woodshop in highschool can build a sealed enclosure. A pre-fabricated sealed enclosure will be o.k. but one built to spec is always better.

You should be able to find a great deal on them on craigslist. You'll need 800w rms to power them. Try and find an amp on the classifieds here, I wouldn't trust an amp on craigslist as you really don't know too much about it and whether it does rated power or not. Find something on the classifieds here that does 800w rms rated power and people will either say 'we all know that amp doesn't do rated power' or you'll see posts saying 'nice amp, glws'

The reason I'm big on getting thw alpine is bc its already in a box (I think ported.. Bc I listen to rap) and I think itd be easier for a rookie like me to just get one already in the box and not have to worry abt it.

There's an electronics store at home thatl sell me a new JL Audio sub (idk model but lower end jl) in a box plus amp and install for 400 bucks. Is that a good deal or should I just go for one that I've found?

Nothing jl makes will be offered as a good deal. Their like crutchfield, that charge crazy prices for people stupid enough to buy their stuff. Yeah, they make good amps and subwoofers...but so do other companies that charge half the price.

and its defiantly worth it to get a ported box built to spec.

get yourself an alpine type r or kicker cvr off of craigslist and there are plenty of people willing to build you a ported box. post a thread saying you need a box built to spec and you'll get tons of replies.

ok . so i am bidding on the alpine type r right now (goin for 85) and am winning. im sure the price will rise but if i win that sub comes in a box already so should i take it out and make a new one if its not ported?

thanks for the help all!

also, whats the difference between a sealed and ported box? ive seen one that im interested say that its in a sealed box (the two diamond D3's) and others dont specify...

im guessing this is of big importance..?

Ported, if proper specs, adds output, though the response curve has a peak.

Sealed, is usually used for sound quality in a simple-to-build way.
