What amp wuld be best for an Alpine Type X 4 OHM subwoofer? Just 1 of them, and should I wire it down to 1 OHM as long as it's 1 OHM stable?

Subwoofers are not rated to be 'stable' at a certain impedence. Depending on the sub in question's voice coil configuration it can be wired to one impedence or another (a single voice coil 4 Ohm sub can be nothing other than 4 Ohms / a Dual 4 Ohmsub can be wired in parallel to 2 Ohms or wired in series to 8 Ohms / a Dual 2 Ohm sub can be wired in parallel to 1 Ohm or in series to 4 Ohms / etc etc etc)

Depending on what VC configuration your sub(s) are is somewhat how you will decide whatamp to drive it with. You need an amplifier that is stable at whatever impedence the sub you plan to run is. Most amplifiers are stable at 2 Ohms in stereo and 4 Ohms in mono mode....while others are stable at 1 Ohm. (refer to the owner's manual for the amp in question for further details)

See this chart to see what resistance loads varying subs with different voilce coil configurations can be wired to. (not an all-inclusive list but it will give you an idea)

To specifically answer your question, though - if you've got a Type X sub with Dual 4 Ohm coils you'll want an amplifier which does somewhere near or at the top of the X's RMS power range and do it at a 2 Ohm load (two 4 Ohm coils wired in parallel such as like here, top diagram)

wire it to 2 ohms and get an alpine MRD-1005...nice amp, I know someone with that combo and its very nice

Arc Audio FD1200.1 it does 1200 watt rms at 1 or a 2ohm load. I think its a regulated power supply.
