need amp recommendations for kicker S10L7 sub

I've had this sub for 3 years pushed by an MB Quart RAA2400 800 watt 4 ohm bridged amp. Just recently the amp's fuses got melted and now i am looking for a replacement. The sub is 4 ohm and and rated at 600 watts rms. I was wondering why the amp choked? Was the MB Quart too weak? Should i go with something in the 1000 watt range?

btw, the box is a prefab kicker ported box.
