Need advice for 8" sub

I have 2003 Toyota 4runner. It comes with a factory JBL system, which has been decent. My stock sub is blown, so I'm looking for a replacement. The factory JBL sub is 8", and from what I can tell I have just under 4" of depth in the stock location (which I'd like to keep, don't have room for a box). So, what is the best 8" sub with less than 4" depth? Pioneer makes a shallow mount designed for free air applications and has a very small depth. However, there are a lot of other options like the Kicker CVT, I believe Kenwood makes a shallow mount, and the JL 8w1 should fit as well. Any advice? I'm going to be getting a small amp to power the sub, something in the 100-200 watt range. I'm not expecting big bass, I just want to get back the bass lost from the blown sub. Thanks!

The mounting depth is the only thing that is bugging me. Most of my common rec's are 4-5 deep.

I'm not a big fan of shallows, but of the ones mentioned, the CVT is bearable. The w1 is also not shabby, and relatively musical.

I played with the new Kenwood shallows, and though being pretty accurate, they take some calculation to get them to drop down low, which can be hard to do in a stock location.

Can't comment on the Pioneer.

Any issues with getting a straight replacement?

Edit: If you do decide to add baffles to increase depth, ID8, W3v3, Sundown E8 are all good choices.

i agree all 8's he mentioned are very nice 8's if you decide to add baffles

There is a panel that goes over the sub, and without modifying the panels I have no room for baffles. I've looked into 8's for a previous ride (sold it before I got the system) and looked at many that have been mentioned (Sundown, ID, etc). Like you all, the mounting depth is what I'm having an issue with. A replacement OEM JBL is an option, but from what I can tell even through a discount online store it's over $350, so aftermarket seems to be the way to go.

Here you guys can see what I'm working with. The first pic you can see the panel over the sub, and the second shows my area to work with.

The ED sub is close, but at 4.3" depth just won't fit. I've considered a custom box, but the biggest thing is cost as I'm on a low budget (wasn't expecting this to come up). A custom box wold be something I may consider, but I don't have the know how to build it. I have an idea that I love, but I don't have the ability to build it and it is too pricey to have built. I know a guy who built a cargo box for his 4runner. I would want the same size enclosure with possibly 2 8's or a single 10" sub mounted in the side (problem would be getting it sealed properly). You can see the way the rear looks in the above pic, then look at this one to see the cargo box. Again, this is just something I'm mentioning, I'm looking for something cheaper and less visible.

I have a JBL GT82, it is 100rms 4ohm with a sensitivity of 93db. I think it would fit what your looking for and be a cheap solution. let me know if your interested.

Modify the door in a simple way. just remove the speaker grill area. baffle it. better woofer. then if you ever go to sell. Just re attach the plastic piece with some glue on the back. as long as you only cut on the seams of the plastic. wont be noticeable. Looks like the square piece (that is framing the grill) is detachable anyway. which woul work great. Just make a square baffle. GL.

What about the JBL GTO804? The mounting depth is listed as 4 3/8", but I know someone who replaced their stock subwoofer in a Pontiac Vibe with the GTO and was extremely pleased with the results.

I know it is hard to tell from the photo, but he made a trim ring to allow the subwoofer to fit:

ETA: He also ported the stock enclosure!

Although it looks like it does, the grill/cover does not snap off. That panel is one complete piece, and I'm not quite ready to start cutting away at that just yet. In my last 4runner I has 2 JBL GTO 10's, and they were decent but not something I'd want again. I've spoken with another guy who seems to think that there is 4.25" of mounting depth, which completely changes things. I guess I may have to just tear it down and measure myself, but it's a pretty good job doing that.
