She is going to be a Paramedic in Afghanistan. 4 month tours with a private contractor/construction company protected by the US military. Pay is $115k/year...

Nope I wouldn't, but then again we may be in different situations.

Only 4 months though, so it's not bad. The down side is I don't think that is long enough to be tax free.

Nope, but at 4 months she's not gonna top 80k so it would be tax free. However if it is only a 4 month contract then its not worth going. Especially if shes gonna be out iin the shit.

BTW, I should know, ive been there as a contractor myself.....and 115k a year isn't worth it....most start at $180.....I was getting $245k

Its a one year contract, she spends 4 months there and 15 days at home/on vacation.

If she's gonna be at a FOB then she has no idea what she's getting into. If its at the ISAF headquarters, it will be like living in a tin can with 3 room mates....thats luxery over there brah.

Your probably right... she needs remote site experience, has been looking for 6 months. If she gets to go then she can other contracts much easier...

$28K isn't bad for only 4 months, it is tax free. She could be going like how I have to go, I'm told its my turn. And I don't get 28K. Thou if your going to go there might as well do a year tour and get the $100k. I know a few that are getting 300K for shit I do.

She hates her current employer and its 3.5 times what she makes right now, so she has her heart set on going.

For me to consider a simlar type of job I would need $250k+ and even then I would have to think for a while about it.

For Amber it would need to be much more for her to consider it.

So I think my view is a bit "skewed" then some others may be.

I also don't know how their going to pull off giving her secret security clearance to go either, it takes a while to get that approved. Unless they interm secret her, that MIGHT work. Also gotta get all the shots (9 of them) which means she gets a free flight to Tampa at McDill AFB to MEDCOM HQ. Hope she's not too squimish either, she's gonna see alot of meat on FOB's.....if she's in Bagram that won't be to bad but Kandalhar province is a total shithole.

Has she looked at other countries over there? There are some nice middle east places to get gigs there like UAE, Oman (my favorite), Kuwait, Qatar....we have a shit ton of bases over there that need people.

Depends on the job shes doing and the FOB. In Iraq we had 2 to a split trailer with bathroom in the middle, thou that was our unit. Most were in trailers that were 3-5/trailer and no bathroom. In Afgan it was dorm style with 2/room with no bathrooms in the building.

Not much I can do to stop her. Its an entry level position and they will be training her for certifications that she needs for higher position. Definatly not worth $100k for the certifications tho.
