you dont HAVE to unbolt the motor mounts, it just makes it a bit easier to get the starter in. i had to use a prybar to get my old one out, but my mini starter off a 95 lt1 went right in.

Well, just to close this thread, we found out that we actually had the wrong starter for my truck.

Though the starter we first had bolted in, it was not a gear reduction starter like the one my truck requires, thus it was larger.
