He gave you what you said you wanted, he sold you your alternator. It isn't his position to know what you're going to do with it.Then why did he sell me it? I told him I wanted to run 16v and he said I needed an external regulator. I think i saw something like this on my old bronco and it only had 1 alternator.
he sold it to you because he wanted your money....the more the better (for him anyway)Then why did he sell me it? I told him I wanted to run 16v and he said I needed an external regulator. I think i saw something like this on my old bronco and it only had 1 alternator.
No, you cannot run a 12v alternator to the 12v post on the kinetik hybrid battery. It must be charged from the 16v side. Though it sounds like you have an externally regulated alt, so you can run a 16v alternator and run the vehicles electronics off the 12v side of the battery. I believe neill barber does that in his blazer.I'm sort of in the same boat as him, minus the car. I have a bigcase GM Alternator (300 amp) that i'm going to install in a lumina most likely when i find a car to use for audio purposes, and I want to run 16v, but i have a mechanic that REALLY feels uncomfy on touching this one.. He told me running a 300 amp alternator at even normal voltages through the cars computer will fry everything eventually, and i assume adding a 0 gauge that does not run through the computer (ie going straight from alt post to batterys) and leaving the factory wire will prevent that.. Is it possible to use a 16v kinetik's 12v post to hook up my original alternator's charging wire and the computer to show it a 12v charging system.. Then running my system through the 16v post completely.
PS. Sorry to post-hijack, but its in the same topic and still might help the OP learn. If the idea above isnt possible, the only option for OP is to research step-down modules that will take your 16v, and put out 12v for the electronics in the car
Thats what i was refering to, I have a 300 amp with the exact same external regulator and i would like to run 16v, with no fears of the computer ever seeing more than 14.5.. But i wouldnt want to go out and get an expensive step-down module when i need to spend the money on a few 16v batterys.. The OP could do the same thing I most likely will have to do though, run the dual post kinetik. The step-down module is an option, but keeping it simple will be very helpful in my and your case (OP).No, you cannot run a 12v alternator to the 12v post on the kinetik hybrid battery. It must be charged from the 16v side.
However, you can run a 16v alternator and run the vehicles electronics off the 12v side of the battery. I believe neill barber does that in his blazer.
To the OP, you can still USE the alternator, you just can't turn the voltage up higher than 14.8 or so.
Nate sold you an externally regulated alternator because you told him you were running 16 volts. Obviously he thought you were running 16v batteries, the kinetik hybrid, or was running 2 alternators. It's not his business to break down every person's electrical system.
