my computer's dvd player gad****it

ive contacted microsoft, sony vaio, and my retailer and the only thing left i can do with them is physically call sony support but i dont do well over the phone with folks i dont know so id like to find another solution.

ive uninstalled/reinstalled my dvd player 3 times, ran my spyware prgm, and ran disk defrag but it hasnt fixed my prob. the problem being that my cd/dvd drive still plays/rips/burns cd's just fine but locks up when i attempt to play ANY dvd! it worked fine just like it should for 3 weeks but then about for the last 2, its been doin this. I cant think of anything I did around that time that I didnt redo that would have caused this. Win XP home came installed on the laptop so Im not sure how i would go about reinstalling it without buying a version of it. i want Pro or Media Center Edition anyways.

the drive is the QSI SBW242C. I cant find the QSI site through sony, microsoft, or by just doing a search for it, hence why I haven't tried upgrading the drivers for it. If anyone knows any possible solutions, feel free to reply here or if ya think this is off topic for some reason (hey, it's the lounge) then drop me an email at noleafclover@mad.scientist.com and thank you very much.

turned off autoplay for dvd movies and vid files, didnt fix it. I might add that when i insert a DVD and i dont have a dvd playing prgm already open, it locks up after 10-15 sec and i never see any dvd prgm open. if I have a prgm already open, it will say "opening media" for example but doesnt even begin to play and it locks up. Im thinking that I should just reinstall windows or something

any more suggestions?

did a search on the firmware (i have US87) and it found one single page. didnt have my drive listed there for me to DL an update. and I am having trouble locating the manufacturer's website. the drive is a QSI SBW 242C but there are like other companies out there called QSI and I always get that when i search. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

they didnt have a driver update, and im thinking that its the BIOS update i downloaded from sony vaio support site because thats about when the problem started.

but sony said in order to get the original BIOS back, id have to send my laptop off to them......****......
