Hello,
Figured I would buy some pieces and do an audio build out while I wait until next year for more engine/appearance mods. I have a 2006 Mustang convertible and for those familiar with the option I have the Shaker 500 complete with 8" slim subs in the doors.
So far I've only made a couple audio specific purchases.
RF 25 to Life POWER1000 5ch Amp
Hertz HSK165 compo set
Hertz HCX165 Coaxials(Will be purchased this weekend)
40sq ft of Damplifier Pro(I lost my 3 gallons of Spectrum liquid spray, I'll be buying that again)
I plan on buying an MTX Thunderform custom stealth enclosure w/sub. I'm only buying this for the use of the enclosure, but I'm going to use the sub until I decide on what will replace the included MTX sub.
This brings me to my first set of questions. I have 2 old RE SEXXX subs, XXX18 & a DD9915. All three are in need of a recone. Should I get one of this reconed or get a new sub? If I get the recone done I think the 1.7 cu ft of sealed space may not be enough room for the XXX if I get it reconed and rebasketed into a 12", so that leaves me leaning towards getting the RE SEXXX reconed. Keep in mind I do have a convertible, so I know I won't have anything for SPL and i'd be lucky to have a decent SQ setup. That being said I don't think I need an overwhelming sub, just something decent.
I'm pretty set for my mids & tweets I think. The Hertz have gotten good feedback everywhere I look. My only concern with those is mounting. I've seen some Mustang installs where they flush mount the tweets in the A pillar. I'm not sold on this, but I think in my case it would be best. I'm not sure if I want to mount them in the A pillars OR flush mount them in my doors. In my last install I had regular tweets in pods on the other side of the side view mirror panel & a set of CDT Super Tweets in the A pillar. I don't think I'll need all of that this go around since in the warmer months my top stays down and I think if I mount them in my doors I'll loose most of the sound with the windows & top down. Does anyone have experience with convertible installs?
My last question revolves around my 8" door subs. The mounting depth is really small. It's just about 3" and the subs I was looking @ are the Kicker CVT 8s. They have a mounting depth of 3-3/8". I'm thinking that after a 3/4 MDF baffle and mounting clay these subs would fit. Is there anyone out there withe experience with these and better yet have them in a Mustang?
Any help would be appreciated. I plan on buying everything between this week and next. Sorry for writing a book, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. Thanks!
