most mp3's online are crap
non variable quick-encoded conversions of pay-downloaded and subscription download aac's and wma's are what's mostly online anymore
severe level and range-clipping, and full of artifacts
if you make a 1st-gen lame mp3 from a cd source witha good bitrate, or vbr atleast 192kb/s with an actual digital-to-digital conversion, you can hardly even tell the difference.
and imo, rhapsody and napster-to-go 160k wma's sound pretty **** good as well, although a bit larger than most illegally obtained music files
