Multiple Subs?

sometimes smaller subs can sound better.

4 12s can be louder than 2 15s, and depending on space available for box size, smaller subs can be more optimized in the enclosure. Many cars can get louder with 2 15s then 2 18s

If you compete you are limited to a certain number of a certain size sub.

depending on your available space you may be able to fit multiple small subs but not be able to fit large subs.

im still in the blueprint for my next system setup...I was thinking about going 2 15's(type R)...I want to get loud with ok SQ. But then it just got me the thinking if I did 4 12s 6 12 etc will that get louder than 2 15s...

It definitely would be louder. Its also beneficial to have your power spread amongst multiple coils.

4 12s would have a total cone area of 452.16 sq inches and 2 15s would be 353.25 sq inches.

My thing too...is I dont want too heavy of a box because it would cause rubbing...I prev had 2 15s (L7s) and that rubbed when I had ppl in the back but anyway...Also over boxes I prefer PORTED. in a 2003 crown vic can I do 4 12's ported?

heck yeah.

You can probably have 4 12s facing up in the trunk and have the ports fire back.

When you go up to 4 subs of the same series, you'll likely need to double the power as well.

You could do 1500w on 2 15's or 3kw on 4 12's.

Depending on how much you are willing to go into, I would stick with the 2 15's, because 1500w is usually doable on a stock electrical with the big-3.... 3kw will require more batteries, and probably a new alt.

Im looking in to upgarding the electrical with the L7s electrically it was a terrible experience...im upgrade the battery upfront, 1 for the back(still a ?), big 3, and new alt is in the blueprint.

Then I think you made the decision for yourself, 4 - 12s would work better. Be sure to get D2 coils to go to 1 ohm.

The more coils you have to spread the power across, the better power handling the entire system will display. Thermal saturation and impedance rise are two of the major headaches that running multiple coils tends to help with.

STUMPED ON THAT...break that down for me...

Basically, heat makes the voice coil's impedance increase. Higher impedance means less output from the amplifier. In other words, you do not gain the same amount of increase in output going from 1,000 watts to 1,001 watts as you would going from 1 watt to 2 watts. Heat decreases efficiency, basically.
So... having more motors to spread the heal throughout means more surface area on voice coils to dissipate this heat, meaning less impedance rise and greater efficiency of your watts.

Im still a freshman in audio...in other words are you saying be careful on going 4 12s? Go the 15s? Really not understanding.
