multiple sub amps

I've seen several installs that use more than one sub amp. What is the advantage of doing this over just wiring two subs in parallel/series? For example this guy

has 4 amps on 2 DVC subs. Why doesn't he just use one amp and wire it in series-parallel? Wouldn't the subs be getting the same power either way?

anyone? I am really curious about this, why would someone buy 4 amps when running 1 amp would give the same amount of power.
