MTX 7512A Sledgehammer - what amp?

Hey guys, heres a typical "what amp?" thread.

Tonight I hooked up a MTX 7512A in a Sledgehammer box to a 1000W sony amp, which is supposed to produce 400 watts rms x 1 at 4 ohms, exactly what the sub needs. BUT, the sub seems to be underpowered unless the gain on the amp is maxed out (wouldnt that burn the amp out over time?) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif The sub sounds kinda loose and flimsy when at a high level, it should kick a lot harder too. Me and my buddies came to conclusion that the sony amp is a pile of ****. Heres some other amps i looked at:

Kenwood KAC-7202

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-um38DvGafA0/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=613KAC7202

Pioneer GM-5200T

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-um38DvGafA0/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=130GM5200T

Rockford Fosgate Punch P4002

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-um38DvGafA0/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?I=575P4002

The Kenwood seems like an awesome deal there, and good power, just slight overpowering the sub. What would you guys recommend for the 7500 to properly utilize it?

Thanks a bunch!

P.S. everything was wired with 4 gauge wire, no capacitor, but headlights do not dim so im assuming that so far i have enough power.

Also, im on a budget, id like to spend no more than $200 on the amp

Is the sub in the trunk? Is the sub singlevoice coil 4ohm? what kind of powerwire running from front to back, how long is the amp's ground?

Always post as much info as you can think of:)

Myself, I would choose something like a Phoenix Gold x400.1 or x600.1 if you can find them. Great amps. I have a x600.1 on a single 4 ohm 12" sub, and it's pretty crazy. They make full power into any load from 1 to 4 ohms. The x400.1's are about $130 shipped from eBay, and the x600.1's are somewhere around $230 or so.

Another to consider if you are on a budget, Rockford's "25 to life" Punch 75 is $200, and will put about 600 watts into that sub. I bought a couple of them after hearing one.

Allright allright //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

T7512-04: http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products/subwoofers/thunder7500.cfm

Sub is in the trunk of a toyota matrix, SVC 4 ohm, 4 gauge power wire, ground wire is a couple feet long at this point, no capacitor. Headlights dim very SLIGHTLY (hardly noticable) when im maxing out the sub, which i never do on regular basis, so i figure im ok on electrical power there.

Here are some suggestions i got on another forum:

RF P500.2 - http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/2406

Orion HP-2800 - http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/5057

PPI A800/2 - http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/5308

MTX Thunder502 - http://stereodirect.com/sdProduct.cfm?PN=THUNDER502R

The MTX is very temping and cheap, but would take a long time to ship.

Type699, those amps look great! the x600.1 is a class D amp, it would be great, might as well spring for the $230 price tag //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif

How about this Alpine?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ALPINE-MRP-M450-600w-MONO-CAR-AUDIO-AMPLIFIER-AMP_W0QQitemZ180029256516QQihZ008QQcategoryZ79825QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

How about this Kenwood?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kenwood-KAC-9102D-mono-block-class-D-amp_W0QQitemZ300030403157QQihZ020QQcategoryZ79828QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Another MTX (too powerful maybe)?

http://cgi.ebay.com/MTX-6500D-Mono-Sub-Amplifier-775-Watts_W0QQitemZ250033020950QQihZ015QQcategoryZ64573QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not sure about that kicker, might as well go with a mono class D amp now maybe. What do you guys think about those amps? Sorry for the long post, but i wanna get it right this time, I already spent more than i wanted, but im LOVIN the bass, my car is already falling apart //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Also, will i be running a risk of blowing my sub with 600 watts rms or so, or is that still within the norm for overpowering? Subs range is said to be 170-400 rms.

Your ground shouldnt longer then 18" rule of thumb but as for the power I have never been a fan of sony amps, slightly over rated. But most of the ones you made links to are decent. Stay within the 500 to 600 rms range.

Im leaning towards the Alpine

# RMS Power: 400W x 1 (at 2 ohms)

# Bridged Power: 600W x 1 (at 4 ohms)

How can it be bridged, if it is a mono amp?

Also, will this class D amp draw rouhgly less power than the sony amp (its more powerful but its class D)?

EDIT: ok never mind the **** alpine the 600W rating is appearantly NOT rms, its MAX, i almost got tricked.

A friend of mine runs a x1200.1 on a single sledgehammer 10. He's had it for about 2 years now, and no problems. I think you'd be ok running a 600 on a 12" sledge.

I am punishing a 12" 4-ohm sub rated at 150w RMS with my x600.1. It's very clean power. All I had was a 30 amp fuse for it, and it hasn't blown yet. I had it running full tilt for about 12 hours when I was camping a couple weekends ago. Nobody can believe it's only 600w on a single 12" sub. A friend of mine has 1200w on a couple 12's was really impressed. He offered to trade his sub setup for mine, even up.

Watch for them on the forums. I paid $165 shipped for my x600.1

The problem you're up against is that you have a single 12" 4 ohm sub. You can either get a bigger Class D amp and run it at 4 ohms, which is like paying for a Corvette and only being able to drive it as fast as a Aveo. Or you can get an amp like the PG Xenons or the JL 250/1, 500/1 that'll do the same power output into any load. Or you can run a Class A/B amp at 4 ohms bridged mono, but then if/when you upgrade in the future, you'll need a new amp.

Same situation I was in. x600.1 solved it for me. Then if I upgrade subs in the future, I am still going to get 600 watts out of it, and I really don't care about the voice coil configuration of the subs, which can be very nice for end of year clearance sales...

cuz fuses can usually hold double their current cuz i had a kenwood amp that put out 460 and a 40 amp fuse at the battery and on the amp and i hooked up a dmm to it and the bish was puttin out like 900 watts! and my sub was a Diamond Audio D3 12'' and handled 400 rms, i still don't understand why that sub didn't blow lol

Correct. Double the current for 2 seconds or something like that. Recommended fuse size for the x600.1 is 60 amps. Birthsheet power output is 800+ watts RMS.

I did happen to pop the 30 amp fuse today.
