Motorycyle Suggestion

driving 44 miles each way, will be quite tiring...
not at all impossible, but after your first few times doing it you will be pretty exausted.
On most bikes 44 miles each way shouldn't be exhuasting at all. I used to ride my lowered roadstar with stiff suspension to work all the time, which was a 46 mile ride each way, and never got exhausted. At 46 miles I would have much rather kept riding than stop and go to work

That was 46 miles of mostly highway though and only a little traffic. If alot of the trip involves stop and go or city traffic it could **** a little.

i always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. but i like sports bikes, and i would look funny as **** on a sports bike considering how big i am.
friend of mine is prolly 320lbs or so and hes got a 97 750 katana and a 06 600 katana...its not as funny looking as you would think lol

I would say a BMW. I know it seems expensive but they can be had in your price range. Easy to ride, pretty comfortable, good on gas and have storage.

I'll try to find you a picture.

Something in this series. This one is a tad over what you are looking for as it is an 1100, but they look semi-sporty but have a nice comfortable seat position (not bent over like a sports bike). Easy installation of side bags.

In the recent gas price increases, I have considered getting a motorcycle to drive to work during the spring/summer/fall.
I do not want a crotch rocket type of deal. I am not a go-fast kind of guy as I only do 70 on the interstate.

I am looking for something in the $5,000 range that can travel the highway (not interstate) at ~ 60mph. I want something pretty easy and comfortable to ride. It also must have some sort of storage compartment to hold my lunch.

I don't know anything about motorcycles and my one attempt to ride one ended in fail. It was a crotch rocket kind of deal and turning was not very intuitive.

Any suggestions?
get a used bmw....

I went to a HD dealership and looked at a couple. I also saw a couple buells but they looked rather small so I am unsure.

They have a motorcycle class for $250...you do some classwork and some riding...I figure after I ride a bit I can figure out if a bike is for me.

The other motorcycle I rode was a 750 and I found it very heavy....but I am wondering if it was more because of it being a sport bike.
The basic issue was turning. From my understanding, those harleys turn more like a standard bicycle and less "lean to turn"
First off if you have trouble turning, cruisers are not for you. You think you can make a U-turn with a fat harley at 5 mph? Many cant, reason why most people get their licence using Ninja 250's. Cruisers are a lot heavier than sportbikes.

If you want to learn the right way, take a MSF course(Only $250) and start on a 500-600cc forgiving bike such as a GS500 Ninja 250, SV 650. All very forgiving bikes and very easy to learn on.

i had a GS-500F i got for just over 5k. ran great. pretty comfortable. and, i was getting 60+ mpg on it. even for a 500cc, still had plunty of power to get me and the woman going down the highway without any problems. insurance was dirt cheap too.

the Buell Blast is ~ $5k is and supposed to be the easier bike to learn on....
It's seems to be a cross between a sport bike and a cruiser of sorts.
Buell is very awesome bike.

Actually the bike I learned to ride on (went through a harley dealership to learn so they of course used buell).

Some pretty neat features on it too.

Sorry, I didn't read this first.

Do the class, best thing you can do! We had some people that had been riding for years and they said they still picked up on things.

Not to mention the reduction in insurance for taking it pays off the class in the first year alone.
