Most Durable HU

I'm looking to replace the head unit in my car. I'm not going to go all out, just a basic head unit. My problem is that it mounts directly above the face level heater vents in the dash, and the heat did nasty things to the Blaupunkt I had in there. I shoved a thermometer in there, and found that with the heat cranked and the vents open, I'm running about 150 degrees farenheit right at the bottom of the heat unit's sleeve. I need a stereo that can stand up to that level of heat.

Whatever I get, I'll be trying deflect or insulate against some of that heat, but I don't want to mess around with lots of stereos and spend lots of money on them as they die. I've looked at a few owners manuals. An Alpine I looked at gives a high-end to its ambient temperature range of 140 degrees. An Aiwa said that it will automatically eject its CD at 112 degrees (man, that sounds annoying). I don't think I found any temperature info from Pioneer, I'm still waiting to hear back from Kenwood on what they test their units for, and Sony's website is royal pain in the butt with little hard information.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with my old 92 blazer. deck was right under vents, so whenever i used the vents, the deck would overheat. you really just gotta fix it with some insulation or something or just live with it (like by not using your vents)

well sounds like your just gonna have to fix it. cause i doubt youll find a deck that can take that kindof abuse. and why do that to your deck, when you can go to home depot and spend less than $5 on insulation to fix it

Look at any Pioneers? My pioneer is directly under 2 vents in my chevy beretta. In fact the trim piece that you have to pull out to install/unistall the stereo has the 2 top vents built into it.

An idea I just had. If you look at like 8mm computer case fans, they are can be found cheap online, you could probably strip off the plugs, and just use the negative and positive wires to connect to power somewhere, though I have no idea where you would hook it up to, unless you wired it into the harness at the back of the unit. But those fans also typically come with 4 holes drilled into the 4 corners of them so you can mount them into a computer case. Maybe if you took some zip ties and used those to mount a couple of them somewhere near where the head unit is getting hot, and set them funnel air away from the head unit, whereever you can put them. Perhaps a setup like that would be enough to take some of that heat off of your head unit. Also I don't know if you would introduce noise into your sound system or not. But it's an idea........

Or if you go somwhere, and get another stock head unit with cd player and maybe high sensitivity speakers to make up for the lower power output??? Just an idea.

If he were to get a stock head unit for his car, if he could get one with a cd player. Then get speakers that have a higher db sensitivity so that they would be more responsive to the lower output of a stock head unit. If he uses an amp, then it's a moot point. Just something I though of at the time, but then again, I may be totally off...

if he has some kind of leak in his ventalation system, a stock HU will have problems too. and why would you ever tell some1 to go back to stock? tell him to get a new car, but never tell him to go stock

I had the same problem as u were my cd player sits, and so far I know kenwoods will not hold the heat, but I found some of the higher end panasonics to be great and never had a problem with them. Other high end pioneers like the 860mp i had good luck with. But it did get warm the panasonic was amazing though it was a 9800 i believe and no matter how hot it got it was fine playing. And I ran it for a year in the summer with no ac and in the winterwith heat going

Mine sits right on top of 3 vents, and just below the defroster.

Lol, it was just an idea. I figured that whatever stock unit they put in there was obviously designed to handle the conditions it would be under. But you are right. If there is a hole in the system, then yeah, that would present a problem for lots of units.

well if an aftermarket deck is overheating, its either the deck or the car. and if he tried a couple decks and/or stock deck and had the same problem, hes prolly got a problem with the heating system. i had this problem in my 92 blazer. the ducts in the dash didnt line up for some reason, so it sent hot air right onto the deck when i used the vents. i say just throw some insulation in there, maybe try the fan idea. and if that dont work, get a new car dude. lol

Beacuse it's not quite that simple. If it were, I would have done it originally. The problem is that there isn't enough space between the ducts and the bottom of the headunit's sleeve to get any decent insulation in there. There is, perhaps, 1/8" of clearance. Now, if you could suggest to me a material I could use that will provide enough insulation in that small amount of space, I would rip the dash out of my car to get it in.

Recommendations?
