mixing woofer sizes

This may belong in the subwoofer section but it adv sql seemed a better fit.

So i have 2 orion hcca 15's in a box tuned pretty low i think its around 30-32hz.

The woofers are crazy on the low end but the higher frequencies rattle the cone or something and it sounds like ****. I can elimate this with the lpf but i loose alot of my "musical bass"

I found an sa8 v2 local and i was thinking of feeding it only the higher frequency bass for a better musical effect.

What do you guys think? Good idea? What should i set the filters at? What frequency should i tune my sa8 box?

Yeah, i was thinking that. But its a straight trade for some old stuff in my closet so im inclined to still pick it up. Care to elaborate why this is stupid?

Edit. Iv only heard that this was a bad idea if you made the woofers compete for the same notes.

If (big IF) you have the amplifiers to handle the additional channel splitting the bass frequencies means, and IF you have the needed two separate subwoofer crossovers, maybe it will work.

Its supposed to be a big no no to run subs this way, but one of the most impressive home subs ever made is using two different sizes of subs to overcome the same problem you're dealing with.

Heres the Velodyne 1812.......

Absolutely do not mix match subs. Not only a dumb idea but also making the problem you have already worse. Might as well buy 4 mismatched tires for your car.

When you say the cone rattles, be more specific. Might be the tinsel leads slapping the backside of the cones you might be hearing....I would investigate that 1st.

It could be well the box also.....since you say your tuned pretty low, they may not play frequencies well above the tuning as apposed to a slightly higher tuned enclosure of preferance....which I'm leaning towards.

Can you post pics of your set up? Amp and subs and inside the vehicle.

You can tune low and still play high but port area has to be right. If you have to much the roll off will be steep.

With ported boxes it's a trade off. Either you want less overall output but more bandwidth or more output less bandwidth.

Its not gonna work, I tried out two 10s crossed high in a box geared for midbass, The subs still hit too low and caused major cancellation and i didnt get any upper notes out of it and lost output on my 18s. Just a waste of time.

Explain roll off please ..... im not sure I understand roll off real well , thanks.

got it, tnaks and ive experienced this many times in the past. What causes this ? enclousures?

Gotta have perfect size box and perfect port area.. Lots of testing

its been done before as long as you have two amp channels to power the two subs. The box I saw had an 8" with a high port tuning and was cut at 50hz. Basically the 8 played 100 to 50. In the same box to the left was a 12" that that had a low port tuning and played 50 down. It didnt have any cancellation issues because the two subs play different frequencies. By memory, it was done because the car didnt have room for a bigger midbass up front. Both subs were in the same box but had separate air space, separate tuning, and didnt run off the same amp channels. Only real issue might be localizing or hearing the sub playing the high frequencies in the back of the car.
