Melted Amp

Here's the problem : A guy I work with was a 2001 Cavalier with two Quantum

12"s, and a Quantum 1000 watt amp ( mounted on the back of the rear seat, with the seat up). He said he was listening to his system fairly loud for about 20 minutes when he started smelling something burning and then the subs started cutting out, but never quit playing completly. The amp has two 60 amp fuses and he says the fuses were melted as well as the area around the fuses. I saw the amp today and it's definetly melted, but it still works even with only one of the fuses plugged in. What happened, why did it melt the fuses and amp? I've never seen this before. Thanks for any help.

Did he put the fuses larger than the recommended amount on the amplifier? The amplifier fuses are designed to blow at 200% for 5 seconds, so for the two 60 amp fuses they would blow in 5 seconds with 240amps going through both the fuses. Usually the fuses are designed to prevent a fire from occuring in your vehicle than fully protecting the amplifier from damage.

The fuses are the currect size, it melted both fuses but only blew one and it still works. Now you can only get one fuse in because the amp is melted where the second fuse would go. I"ll get pics of it tomorrow. Any one else have any ideas as to what's going on here?

The only thing I can think of is one of two things:

a.) Quantum miscalculated something and is using fuses of a higher rating than what they should be, or

b.) The fuses are of extremely cheap quality and don't conform to their ratings.
