MDF rings for my door panels

After reading squeak's sticky on door panels, I went straight to the hobby shop for some clay.

I plan on adding more "dynamat" (or something cheaper, any recommendations) inside my door panel,

however, my next step will be adding plexi glass inserts, to my holes in the door panel

Started off by making a jig for my router

As I said earlier, I need to go back and add deadner to the inside of my door panel, as well as plexi-glass panels in the big holes.

Last year, when I first put deadner, I only put it on the outter skin, and only one layer...

So, the upgrade starts.

Never can get finished, then I learn more, of what I didn't know...

where is the modeling clay?

enlighten me please. I need to ANGLE my rings in my doors. Is the clay used to point the ring? If so, what is it exactly? I'm about to find a woodshop to plane some MDF rings down for me, but if this is something I can do myself, I'd like to try.

Good point, I didn't point out that part of the process

The molding clay is the most important part of the installation!!! The molding clay is how you mount the MDF to the door panel with a PERFECT SEAL!!!

I used blue molding clay, as pointed out by the red circle & arrow

I was able to get a really good seal with foam weather stripping tape it flattens out under alot of force but took alot of pressre to do so, it kinda looks like it oozes out the sides of the MDF when you Torque the bolts holding the MDF into the door skin enough. I don't quite get how you used the clay and have the speaker bolted to the pannel tightly? If you put pressre on that MDF ring won't the clay mushroom out?

What if it gets hot? It just looks like the clay is actualy between the MDF ring and door skin to the extent where if you remove the clay there would be a space? I thougth the idea with clay is to mount the ring against the door and seal around the MDF Ring, not to rely on it to support the speaker? Just seems to me this would not work well in heat over time. Or is there something else keeping the space between the MDF and Door Skin? Maybe More MDF between the ring and the doorskin, and the clay is just used for the seal?

oh well im just a dumb newb so what do I know anyways.

There are places which the MDF firmly lies on the door panel, but there are points where it doesn't, that's where the clay comes in (in addition to the dampning factor). I screwed the MDF tightly to the panel, and used the clay to fill in gaps. This is especially helpful when your speakers are oversized (almost 7").

Oh yea, for those of you who are wondering about the clay melting.

I installed my speakers last night and,

today it was 98 degrees (not the heat index), no problems........yet

we are having record temps here it was well over 100 here also, 120 in arizona killing like 18 people...

I hope that is high temp modelling clay.

**** dude yer not a noob yer a ****. You could have gotten the same effect with a lil foam weather stripping.. also the idea of the clay is to make airtight and deaden that whole area... you dont have enuff clay on there... your missing the whole point.....

clay huh..interesting.....I can see it being easier to remove -i've always used high temp strip caulk for both mounting the rings, and mounting the drivers

I think the clay should work unless it melts, might keep the seal better if he added more but maybe it's real good clay and that is not necessary hehe.
