MCC404M In the Shop

Ok so my Mcintosh amp was doing fine until I took a right turn. Then I heard a mild cracking sound and both power guard lights came on and it wouldn't respond. The repair place (George Meyer Tv & Stereo) is quoting me $500 for the repair, which I am proceeding with.

I guess the consensus is that a cord is loose and I am wondering if I should trust American Radio of Knoxville with the re-installation (they were the ones that originally put it in.)

Has anyone had an issue like this before? Any good places in/around Knoxville to do the re-install and check everything?

I had to jump the cars battery earlier in the week, could this have caused the problem?

Sigh... really bummed about the whole thing.

The owner is a talented guy, you will have a rock solid box. He has the box I ordered ready... just want my amp back before I drop the subs in.
Im glad to hear that. its about an hour and a half drive from here so i hope its worth it. he hasnt posted the finished pictures yet but im sure its done as im going to be there around 2 tomorrow

Called the repair place and they have it working.

They said the most likely cause was something loose inside the amp which shifted around and shorted a bunch of components. Takes a load off my mind that it wasn't my wiring or my speakers causing it to short.

Has anyone had a similar issue like this?

if you buy mcintosh you better know how to install yourself.
That a fair comment. I do know how to install amps HU's and speakers. I paid someone to do it because I wanted the amp mounted nicely on a carpeted stage. There was nothing wrong with the install job, problem appeared to come from inside the amp. It was mounted securely and all the connections were solid. I made a turn in the car and the force caused something to sift in the amp, not the fault of the installer or myself (I wasn't turning very quickly either).

I probably SHOULD have done the work myself in hindsight, but I was busy.

After something like this I doubted myself and the installer, I was thinking there was something I missed or should have checked for, not the case apparently. The blame rests with McIntosh labs and their QC department.

that repair bill is a bit over the top. Its not like McIntosh uses FETS any much different than anyone else.
I sent it to an authorized repair center. The only authorized repair center...

They have that part of the market cornered.

I was told that a lot was wrong with the amp, I believe the guy the amp was doing a lot of weird things when I sent it in. The amp has meters and when I used an iPod to check the rca's (plugged it into channels 3 and 4 only) the power meters indicated there was signal from all channels and then it shut off.

Just curious though what would you consider fair for an amp repair (around 200-300$)?
