Match the RMS power of the subwoofer to the RMS power of the amp?

it depends on the sub and amp. look for CEA amp ratings, and buy from reputable manufacturers.

i prefer to have more amplifier power than i need - that way i can avoid clipping, have increased dynamics, and operate with lower distortion.

Make sure to match impedance first. Then try to have both the RMS and quality in the same ball park. Either a little higher or lower is okay, just not grossly different.

4 ohm 400 watt sub matched to a 4 ohm 400 watt amp of approx equal quality. No point in spending $2k on a sub and drive it with a $99 amp, or vice versa.
