Making Your Own "music keg" from a spare Hard Drive

I seriously doubt that the cd changer cable is serial if it's just the matter of hooking up the h/d. HD's send data really, really fast. Serial connections send data about 2-3k a second. Anyways, what I would do is buy a cheap pxa255 board/chip wire up a usb 2.0 h/d up to that and use the serial connection from the pxa board to interface with the HU. pxa boards are often used in pdas but the expensive thing on the pda is the lcd touch screen. That's usually about 200-250 to replace in a 400 dollar pda. Also using a pxa board you could have the potential to hook up a touch screen and play movies. With this being said even though pxa255 chips are 400mhz they are low power chips with a lot of shit built into it. It actually runs about 200mhz. You could use netbsd or linux to power this. I would recommend netbsd because there would be less porting to do. You might want to contact your HU's manufactur about it, usually they'll help you out. Anyways, for me to do this it'd take about 2-3 months of working 6-8 hours a day on it. If you have all the tools you need and everything it'd cost about 150-200 bucks. You could find a used/broken ipaq 5xxx for pretty cheap. All you need is the board. You'll haveto make a jtag cable for flashing the rom... It's a lot of work though.

Yea, hook it up in your comp as a slave drive and reformat to the right format. My guess it is FAT32. The only thing it can be is either IDE or SATA, both can be bought, so that doesn't matter.

Hey, this is something I can actually contribute to!

First, the Music Keg uses proprietary hard drives. You can't just swap them out for new ones, I've tried. However, an easy way to take care of this situation is the Archos Jukebox. Just get a busted one off eBay, and swap out the hard drive (yes, these you can swap freely). They'll take any capacity, but need to be formatted to Fat32. After you get that, find a CD-RB10 for the Pioneer to turn your changer input into a set of RCA's, then get a converter to turn the 1/8" stereo jack into the RCA's. Cheap, and sounds pretty good.

I already have an iPod and I would prefer to use that if its possible...do I just do the same thing?
Sure. With the CDRB10, you can use the Aux input for anything. An iPod, external CD player, MD player, turntable, you name it. You just need to get that input adapter, and find some way to get the output from your device into an RCA jack form.

They are really more durable than you would think. They have been used in cars in many cases, and I'm sure they still work. It may take a little bit of life out of them, but its not going to break it.
Most car audio devices using hard drives also use Laptop Hard drives, which are designed to handle more vibration and shock. I would not use a normal computer hard drive in my car, I would consider using a laptop drive though.
