Making circle cutouts for subs?

What do you guys use? I have a couple of subs w/ no templates, and any compass I see being sold around here make small circles. A neighbor told me to draw lines from the center and connect the ends to form a circle, but I figure maybe there's a better way. Thanks.

I use a ruler, drill two holes the radius of your circle apart. Now, put a nail in one hole and trace the perimiter by putting a pencil into the other hole and making a circle.

Make sure you have REALLY small holes though so that the measurement is accurate.

Ok thanks. I'm getting an 18" avalanche and the cutout is 16-17" in diameter. I'll search for that post too Joedirt. I checked out an art store and they wanted $70 for a compass w/ an extension that can cover a circle that size. Shiiiiyat, they must be crazy.

I used my router to make all my cut outs for my 'glassed box.

I made up a little jig here. Then after making some measurments and a few test cuts, i got it to the right dimensions. I made multiple passes on it as well. It took a bit more time, but it came out perfect

JRZ126...... That is exactly what I am talking about in the thread I started on circle jigs. Mine looks alot like jasper200. But they do the exact same thing, good job and thanks for the reinforcement.............

I wish you would have tucked the carpet inside the sub holes so you dont see the MDF rings

Yeah I kinda cut the outter rings alittle too small so there wasnt much room for the subs, let alone some carpet. I just half assed the carpet on there anyways. If I find time to do it again, I'll throw some black paint on those rings so they dont stick out like a sore thumb
