I got this amp its a huge chrome amp with rack bars and everything, i read on google it was tested by an audioshop to do 2980 RMS @ 1 ohm. Some people told me its a "cheater amp" What exactly does that mean? Anyone know if i should sell this and get another amp, or keep it and get some subs for it... if so, what subs shouldi get for this amp

A "cheater amp" is used to get into lower competition classes, and blow them away; ie, an amp that's rated at 100 watts (@ 4 ohm) but will cough up 1200w at less than an ohm would be a "cheater amp," because you could get into a hundred watt class with greater than 100 watts.

Doesn't really apply anymore today; MECA, dBdrag, IASCI all have their own rules.

That amp is overrated... it's rated 4000wrms@1ohm bridged... but you'll only get 2800-3000wrms according to some tests... but it is still a powerful amp and it's a high current amp... you better have a good electrical system

what you mean by good electrical setup? its run off 0 guage off extra orbital gel pack battery in trunk. (i have 2 batterys both orbital gel pack)

you won't need a big mean altenator, GUYS most competitions require the car to be SHUT OFF during competition now anyway! your gel packs will be fine but I would definitely install a voltmeter on the dash and keep an i one them, if you don't put back what you take out then they will eventually die, soooo.. just don't play it hard all the time and you'll be fine. what is the deal with guys and altenators in this forum geez! my system draws 240 amps at half volume and I have never had a problem and i'm using the stock.

a cheater amp is one that is WAY under rated....

like the old linear power hv amps, rated @ 50 watts mono into 4 ohms, when they did 2500 into 4 ohms.

an amp that is rated @ 100 mono into 4 ohms, that does 1600 into .25 ohms is not a cheater amp- it still only does 100 @ 4 ohms, and thats the way the orgs rate them- at 4 ohms.

He didn't say he wanted to run it full tilt with the car off.
